The Spherical Photo Gallery

The new AS3 3D methods available in Flash Player 10 and Flash CS4 make it very easy to create 3D effects that before required advanced tools like Papervision3d. In this effect, we show how to bulid a 3D spherical photo gallery. Click on the image below to open the gallery:

In the package, you will find the spherical_gallery.fla file which contains the complete source code. The code is attached to the first frame of the Timeline for maximum simplicity. The file is exhaustively commented and should make it easy to follow and customize the code.

It is truly amazing how easy constructing the gallery is. Since every DisplayObject is embedded in the Flash's 3D space, we can literally construct the thumbnails sphere by positioning elements in 3D. Then we use simple rotational methods and depth-sort the images.

You may want to take a look at another 3D photo gallery in our tutorial: '3D Photo Gallery in Flash CS4'. We use similar techniques in the example presented here.

The images of the outer space that you see in the gallery are courtesy of NASA: NASA multimedia collection.
