A Widget with Controls

In the applet below, the same technique of taking snapshots of Sprites is used to create a widget whose one side contains user's controls. The controls affect the state of the other side of the widget.

  • Download all 'as' and 'fla' files corresponding to this tutorial: widgets.zip

The files corresponding to the applet above are 'DynamicFlip.fla' and 'WidgetFlip.as'. They have to be in the same directory for the 'fla' file to find the 'as' file.

Note: If you see imperfect performance by the widget above, you still have the old version of the Flash Player 9, version 9.0 r.45 that contains a bug. The widget performs correctly in versions 9.0.115.0 or higher. However, even if you have the version 9.0.115.0, Adobe recommends that you immediately update to the current version 9.0.124.0 due to security reasons:

Get latest version of the Player 9 for your browser.

If you have an older copy of Flash CS3 Professional, Adobe recommends that you update it so it contains the newest version of the Player 9:

Update your Flash CS3

You can read about the security fixes in the latest version in the TechNotes:

TechNotes on the new version's security fixes.

Of course, with Flash Player 10 now in beta release at Adobe Labs, we are all excited about Flash Player 10 and its 3D capabilities. As soon as Flash 10 Beta authoring tool becomes available, we will bring you updated versions of this and other 3D tutorials (if they can be be significantly improved with the new version).

On the next page, you will find Bri's comments about the widgets.
