A Textured Sphere

In the applet below, we use the same techique but a different image. The result is a wood-textured sphere. We discuss the custom AS3 classes behind both examples on the next page.

Comments

In both examples we use a sphere as our surface. Texturing other surfaces is as easy as changing parametric equations and a few settings in the custom BitmapSphere class. We will show examples of other textured surfaces in an upcoming tutorial.

In another upcoming tutorial, we will take up the subject of texturing surfaces in Flash Player 10. The task might be simplified with the new built-in AS3 method 'drawTriangles' which is likely to take over the work of our custom BitmapTransformer class.

Flash Player 10 is now available at the Adobe Labs in a beta version. If you are intersted in getting a head start with authoring for FP10, check out our tutorials: Getting Started with 3D Methods in Flash Player 10, and Interactive, Open-Sided Bitmap Cube in Flash Player 10.

On the next page, we discuss ideas behind the applets.
